Painting The Duel: Forest Green, Burgundy and Storm-Slate Scales

The Duel is a dynamic Realm of Dreams display model that brings an archer and dragon into one tightly framed confrontation. The live Maximum Minis listing describes the figure as a 75mm-scale model standing roughly 100mm tall, supplied as an unpainted resin print. The overlapping forms make colour separation especially important: the archer needs to remain readable against the dragon without turning the piece into a collection of unrelated bright areas.

Preparation and priming

Dry-fit the archer, bow, arrow and dragon before committing to glue, because the crossing lines are the visual strength of the sculpt. Remove any remaining support marks carefully, wash the parts if required, and use a black primer followed by a controlled light-grey zenithal pass. That gives the scale texture, layered armour and sweeping cloth an instant map of light while preserving useful shadow beneath the archer and dragon.

The core palette

A restricted palette keeps the two subjects connected: deep forest green, muted burgundy, cool steel, warm leather, storm-slate blue-grey, pale warm grey and a small amount of amber-orange reflected light. Repeat colours in small places rather than introducing a new hue for every detail. The green armour and burgundy cloak make the archer the focal point, while the cooler dragon acts as a broad visual counterweight.

Forest-green armour and burgundy cloth

Start the armour from a near-black green, then build highlights through forest green toward a restrained desaturated mint on the sharpest edges. Paint trim and weapon fittings in dark gunmetal, adding narrow silver highlights only where light would catch. Warm brown leather breaks up the plates without competing with them. For the cloak, work from deep plum shadows into muted burgundy and dusty rose on the most exposed folds; glaze back toward the midtone if the highlights become chalky.

Storm-slate scales and controlled warmth

Base the dragon in a dark blue-grey and layer toward storm slate across raised scale rows. Keep the belly a warmer pale grey so the anatomy remains clear, then darken horns and claws toward charcoal. A restrained amber-orange reflection around the face and nearest underside creates tension and suggests distant fire without requiring a literal flame effect. Keep this glow thin and local: the eye should still read the sculpt first.

Rock, ash and final finish

Treat the base as cold charcoal stone, drybrushing with neutral grey before adding sparse ash-brown warmth to selected edges. A few controlled dark washes will settle the dragon's feet into the rock. Use matte varnish over cloth, leather, scales and stone, then restore a slight satin finish to polished armour, eyes and claws. This material contrast adds depth without changing the palette.

Creative lore: The Arrow at Ashpeak

Imaginative lore: Kaelira reaches Ashpeak as the mountain wakes beneath her. The dragon is neither quarry nor pet; it is the final guardian of a pass that will collapse at dawn. Her single arrow is meant not for its heart, but for the iron seal lodged between its scales. The frozen instant captured by the sculpt becomes a duel of judgement: strike true and free the beast, or miss and bury the valley below.

Display and narrative ideas

For display, turn the model until the arrow line and dragon's head form the clearest diagonal, then keep the surrounding shelf space quiet. If you want a secondary narrative use, the scene can represent a legendary trial, a guardian encounter or the decisive illustration for a campaign handout, but the large format is strongest as a self-contained painting project.
